What I mean is that myself and my co-workers got 6 pencils and we connected them one going across and two going up like a U. We connected them and then started asking questions, we used it like a Ouija board. They started going in and out and up and down as they answered our questions. So I guess what I am asking is what causes this and is it really spirits?

I haven't ever heard of using pencils. I have used pendulums made of many types of crystals, my favorite being rose quartz.
One of the best ones I have ever used was a wedding band tied to a human hair (my own hair, actually) and it was accurate beyond belief.
Ouija boards work through spirits; I don't know about your pencil thing. But I will issue you a word of warning. These things are not playthings, and can be quite dangerous if you are not careful.
You should always take care when using any type of "portal" that could be a potential entry for a spirit, especially if you are not a gifted medium. I read Tarot, and do pendulum divination, but I am not a gifted medium at all. I am very cautious about such things, because there is danger in them.
A friendly spirit or a prankster spirit is one thing, but an angry one or one that is malevolent can cause you no end of trouble. It may not happen that often, but I have heard it happen and it can be very scary.

No. Have you done the three chrystal thing of placing twoo chrystals upright and balance the thrird on top and look in thecenter . Supposed to be able to see scenes of the past.

ummmm hun putting pencils together in the shape of the "u" I can gaurentee you its not a spirit. the only spirit is God.
