Without question...it was Babe Ruth. I could quote you all the stats..but why bother? (OK.. one...his slugging pct is .690 and batting avg. is .342, only Gehrig, who left the game early, and Ted Williams, lost prime years to the war, even compare. Unfortunately for them, they couldn't pitch.) If you know baseball, understand how the game evolved and have the ability to evaluate the changes, then you know the answer. There are several players you can compare him to, but there is no equal. More proof? http://www.baberuth.com/flash/about/achiev.html

There's definitely not a clear-cut winner to this prize. Ted Williams sure was great. Mickey Mantle was also one of the best. Roberto Clemente is right on up there too. But the best player to ever round the bases was the Say Hey Kid: Willie Mays.

Babe Ruth, Shoeless Joe Jackson, Lou Gehirg, Tony Gwynn Sr., Lefty Carlton, Mike Schmidt, Honus Wagner, Ozzie Smith, Hank Aaron, Mike Piazza, Carlton Fisk, Scott Rolen, Alex Rodriguez as shortstop, Ken Griffey Jr.... And the list goes on for an eternity. This was just off my head if I went to a webstie and started looking up players it would go on forever

Without a doubt, Babe Ruth. The only player EVER that was a Stellar hitter AND pitcher in Professional Baseball. No one else has ever been and probably ever will.

The Great Bambino. Babe Ruth not only had some great stats as a hitter but this guy had amazing stats as a pitcher too. Not many people know that babe ruth was a pitcher. He threw a 23-12 season with a 1.75 e.r.a. which is unheard of today. his hitting stats are amazing but think of this he didn't become a full time hitter until five years into his career.

It has to be the Babe. That combination of average , awesome power , speed and great pitching ability places him head and shoulders above the rest.
I just heard a bunch of guys choke on their breakfast. I did say speed. Ruth had 136 career triples and big fat slow guys simply don't get triples.
As far as Nolan Ryan Being the greatest player / pitcher. No way
Before they make that proclamation again they should look of the record of one George Thomas Seaver.
Seaver was 311-205 a wp % of. 603 and an E.R.A of 2.86
Ryan was 324 -292 wp. % of 526 and an E.R.A of 3.19
Since the name of the game is winning ball games not racking up individual stats., Seaver has it all over Ryan

Pete Rose. Most Hustle, most spirit, most career hits. Sure HOF if baseball wasn't dumb. Homers are nice, but when you talk about all around players, the Babe just doesn't compare, he couldn't even beat Henry Aaron, who faced much more pressure with the color barrier and all that stuff. Not to mension that it is always easier to hit when the guys around you can hit well.

Ted Williams, best pure hitter in baseball history. 3 times had a .400 batting average and over 500 homeruns, also a great fielder.

Lets say bonds would have only hit 550 home runs. He is still the greatest. Lets talk about the only member of the 400/400 club not to mention the only member of the 500/500 club. Not to mention 8 Gold Gloves which could have been more if he hadn't bulked up
