Well actually it would be the south pole that is attracted to the north pole of the Earth's field. Wikipedia has a great summary of magnetism and this excerpt should help explain it:

Magnetic dipoles
Normally, magnetic fields are seen as dipoles, having a "South pole" and a "North pole"; terms dating back to the use of magnets as compasses, interacting with the Earth's magnetic field to indicate North and South on the globe. Since opposite ends of magnets are attracted, the 'north' magnetic pole of the earth must be magnetically 'south'.

A magnetic field contains energy, and physical systems stabilize into the configuration with the lowest energy. Therefore, when placed in a magnetic field, a magnetic dipole tends to align itself in opposed polarity to that field, thereby canceling the net field strength as much as possible and lowering the energy stored in that field to a minimum. For instance, two identical bar magnets normally line up North to South resulting in no net magnetic field, and resist any attempts to reorient them to point in the same direction. The energy required to reorient them in that configuration is then stored in the resulting magnetic field, which is double the strength of the field of each individual magnet. (This is, of course, why a magnet used as a compass interacts with the Earth's magnetic field to indicate North and South).

Magnets attract iron, steel, and a few other materials. You can’t see
magnetism, but you can see and feel its effects. Magnets either
attract or repel each other. If a magnet attracts, it pulls the object
closer. If it repels, it pushes the object away. This power around
the magnet is called the magnetic field. The closer an object is to
the magnet, the stronger the field. As the object gets further away,
the magnetic field weakens.
Bar magnets are common magnets. The ends of these magnets are
called poles. The Earth has a magnetic force, too. The Earth has
two poles, a North and a South Pole.
If you put a bar magnet on a string, it will be pointing North when
it stops moving. Compasses have small magnets in them. The
painted point of a compass points North. The strong magnetic pull
of the Earth pushes and pulls the magnet in that direction.
You might have heard the saying “opposites attract”. The opposite
poles of magnets attract, or pull towards, each other. Two of the
same poles repel, or push away from, each other. Take two
magnets and test this out. Bar magnets are often labeled with an N
and S for each pole. Some magnets are not marked, but it is easy to
test them and find out which pole is which. If they attract, they are
opposite poles. If they repel, they are the same poles.
There are other types of magnets. Magnets are sometimes in a
horseshoe shape. They are sometimes made into shapes that you
can stick on your refrigerator. Why would a magnet stick to a
refrigerator and not the kitchen counter? The answer is the material
of the counter is not made of iron or steel. The refrigerator door is
made of iron or steel and therefore holds the magnets. It is a good
way to hold schoolwork that is special to you.

There is a magnetic area known as the magnetic north pole near the physical north pole and this is what a compass points to.

actually the "geographic north pole" of the earth is the "magnetic south pole" of the earth!.... amazing right?

well so wen u say the north pole of the magnet is attaracted to the north pole of the earth u are actually sayin it is attaracted to the south "magnetic pole" of the earth...
and hence the north geographic pole of earth

hence it is only obvious isnt mysterious...!!!

fairly, it would not. The compass is fascinated in the magnetic north of the earths' axis, that's actual, aprrox. 2 deg. off of genuine north. per risk extra, seem it up. besides, the compass has to do with the magnetic field from the earths' middle. peace
