I have shortlisted my baby names to Alex and Evan. What's your impression of these two names? Which one do you like better? Do people usually call Evan Ev?

They're both great, but Evan gets my nod for a couple of reasons.

Your son will not be tripping over quite as many people with his same name. The 2000-2005 period Social Security applications for babies shows Evan ranked 48th, with 51,287 boys named thus.

There were a heck of a lot more boys (and girls) named something close to Alex. Here's the rank of the name and raw number:
7 Alexis89,512 female
17 Alexander104,903
37 Alexandra40,837 female
62 Alex40,041
71 Alexa25,551 female
114 Alexandria17,929 female
135Alexis17,738 male
144 Alexia14,007 female
210Alec10,342 male
339 Alexus5,416 female
720Alexzander1,509 male
759Alexandro1,377 male
894 Alexandrea1,353 female
954 Alexys1,021 female
980 Alex919 female

Evan, as you undoubtedly know, is of Welsh origin. Variant of a Gaelic name anglicized as John (Hebrew) "the Lord is gracious". In Celtic, the name means "young warrior". In Welsh, it means "God is Good". It is also used as a short form of Evangelos, which means "good messenger" in Greek. In Hebrew, Evan means "rock".

Alex is Greek, a form of Alexander, defined as helper and defender of mankind. That's a good meaning too, but I still like Evan best.

I've never heard any of my friends Evan called Ev. While I suppose you could shorten Alex to Al, the only Al's I know of are Alberts. The only diminutive I've heard for someone named Alexander other than Alex is Alec.

Have fun with your new baby!

I like the name Alex over Evan. Both are good names. I suggest you go with the one that sounds good with the last name.

I like the name Evan better than Alex. Alex will most likely be shortened to Al whether you like it or not. I really doubt anyone will shorten Evan to Ev. It is less likely to happen than Alex being shortened to Al.

Tough call. People may call Evan Ev but on the opposite side they could call Alex Al which I think is worse than Ev. That is simply my opinion though and you will have to think about which you like you know? It will be your child...

Evan. In my opinion its not as common and I just like the sound of it. I also think its too short to have a nick name like Ev.

If these are the only choices...definitely Evan is the best one. Alex is usually the target of other kids to be called "Alexadria" or something like that. Make it as easy as possible for him when he finally goes to school, choose the name that is less likely to be made fun of......
