It will depend.

There is a federal minimum wage in place ($5.15), but many states offer employees a higher wage.

Waitresses, however, as "tipped" employees, may, in some states, be paid lower than the federal and state minimum wage due to a thing called the "tip credit." This basically allows the employer to pay wait staff around $2-3 per hour since the wait staff are making at least $2-3 (or whatever it takes to make up the difference between the lower wage paid and the actual federal/state minimum wage). So a waitress in California may make $7 per hour plus tips, while a waitress in Missouri may only make $3.15 per hour plus tips.

Check out your state's department of labor website. Usually there's a FAQ section that will tell you what the wage is and whether there are any variations. Good luck!

Even different cities have different minimum wages. In San Francisco, the minimum wage has just gone up over $9 an hour. It doesn't have any special wages for tipped employees. Of course it's much more expensive to live here.

I believe it went to $8.00 an hour in Canada but then our dollar is different than yours. But considering that you are a waitress that gets tips that are often not counted as taxable income, some establishments may pay lower knowing this unless you pool your tips and split it with the other service workers then they may pay the full amount. Team work is always best in this sort of job.

It went up to 3.65, at least that's what it is here in FL. I'm pretty sure that it's the same all over though.
