I imagine some of us have a god complex....
Me, I try to save those on the edge because I believe that life is better than death... and pleasure is better than pain.... and happyness is better than sadness..
If there is a chance I can help.... then i'm going to attempt to help...
It's what defines me...

That's a really interesting question.
But I think it mostly depends on the individual and on the situation, it's not a matter that can be generalized. Some people do it because they feel superior and it feeds their ego, but there's more behind this feeling of superiority though. If helping makes them feel superior, it doesn't necessarily mean that they are shallow and selfish. The fact that it makes them feel better about themselves shows that they are aware that their charitable actions are a positive thing. And this means a lot. Sometimes, even if the only reason they do it is to gain more pride, the fact that they at least DO it is significant.
But there are various types of people and you can never know what's really in their mind unless you peel off all the unconscious layers of their personality until, you reach their true origin, where their mentality lays uncovered.

I am a paramedic, and I am in it for the simple reason of helping people. Why would someone feel superior. It is not fun and games and there is alot of stuff that you see that you will never forget; for example, a dead child being pulled from a wreck and one foot is missing and the other is hanging by a tendon-she is four years old; her brother is pulled out from underneath the vehicle and his eyes are bugging out of the socket with a blank stare- he is three years old.
So do you think a person would feel superior after witnessing this and there was nothing they could do about it? Superior?--no.
Helpless-- that is how you feel.
