Columbia's logo is the female personification of the USA, Columbia, holding a torch.
In 1993, the logo was repainted digitally by New Orleans artist Michael Deas. It has been rumoured that Annette Bening was the model, but in fact Deas used a model named Jenny Joseph.

The logo first appeared in 1924, and though multiple models have come forward over the years and claimed to have posed as the original lady, Columbia Pictures says they have no records or documentation to verify any of the claims. Although the first model for the logo is unknown, Bette Davis claimed that Claudia Dell was used. In 1987, People Magazine reported that a Texas-born model and Columbia bit-player named Amelia Batchler had modeled for the logo in 1933. And a February 2001 article in the Chicago Sun-Times reported claims by a local woman named Jane Bartholomew, who worked as an extra at Columbia in the 1930s, that she was the model for the version of the logo that appeared late in that decade. This logo was replaced with a modernized version of the "Torch Lady" in 1981. In 1993, the logo was repainted digitally by New Orleans artist Michael Deas. It has been rumoured that Annette Bening was the model, but in fact Deas used a model named Jenny Joseph. Rather than use Joseph's face however, Deas constructed a composite face made up of several computer-generated features.

She is an artist's rendering of Columbia who is a personification of the "spirit" of The United States, derived from Christopher Columbus, the man who everyone believes discovered the continent. That is also
why our capital is Washington, the District of Columbia.
There are many versions of her, just as there are many versions of Betty Crocker. These "ladies" get makeovers from time to time. See www. reelclassics.com about the logo's history.

You're all wrong. It is a representation of an ancient Babylonian pagan goddess Seramis.
