i have just moved into this place and this is my first time flatting in New Zealand. the problem is that my flatmate is a pain. he doesnt do his dishes he gets friends over and they use all the dishes and they just leave them in the sink. there are bottle of beer juice and all kinds of stuff just lying around. he doesnt lock the door when he leaves and the list just goes on. Since i am not to big on Confrontation i wrote a note and left it on the fridge and he now does some of the stuff but now refuses to talk to me. I dont know the way to handle the situation. his friends come over and they are here at all hours with the TV going on loud and since i work every single day of the week and go to bed early it just doesnt allow me to sleep and i am irritable. what do i do? i dont want to be the bad flatmate?

No, you are not a bad flatmate. He has pushed you into the assertive mode because he is an inconsiderate idiot. Why would he even think he is suitable to share a flat with anyone? People like him should live in a barn with the animals. There is nothing wrong with telling him to pickup after himself. Ditto for the loud noises and disrespect of your sleep. If you cannot sleep, you cannot work, thus no rent payment! If he chooses to be an ***, offer to find a suitable barn!

move out immediately
put away all your belongings you don't want destroyed or disappeared. He or his friends may break them accidentally or as petty retribution. It sounds like he wouldn't be above that.

Since he is soooo..irresposible, what makes you think he will be paying his share of the rent on time, or that he won't move in a friend later on?

Move out and don't worry about the money. It might cost you way way more down the line if you don't move out now.

Move out, find a new room/flat. Or if you've no choice, be more assertive, be more firm and tell him what you don't like.
