Well the easier and quickest way is:

1.20 X 30.00 = 36.00

a simple way if you are in a hurry.
You know that 10% is three bucks
you know that 10% + 10% = 20%
so you just say 3 (the 1st 10%) + 3 (the 2nd 10%) =6 bucks or 20%

This works quite well for 30%, 40% etc.
now if the percentage off is 15% then you would say 10% = $3.00
Half of that 5% = $1.50
so your 10% + 5% = 15% so your savings would be $4.50!

Using the $30.00 from your question. If the percent off was 25%, I would just say okay I know 50% off is 15 bucks and then half of that is 25% or $7.50

using the same $30.00 from your example, I would always check myself and say well I know 30% of the $30.00 would be 10% x 3 or $9.00 so I know that if the percentage is 25% it would have to be less than nine bucks (or 30%) so if the figure I have come up with is more than that, I know I have done something wrong!

I have a 9 year old and this works great with her. She can basically do it in her head (she hasn't mastered factoring in tax so if the amount off is 10% we just say that the PRICE is the price since the 10% pretty much covers the taxes
You need no pens or paper
YOU CAN DO THIS quite easily in your head!
Now enjoy the valentine's day sales!!!

Convert 20% to a decimal (.20) and multiply by $30. The answer is $6 off. The total owed is $30-6 or $24.

multipy it by .8 (80%)
$30 x .8 = 24

for this example full price is 100% so subtract 20% to get 80%
