In the cartoon, I’m not sure. Sea hag usually had vultures hanging around. Bernice the Whiffle Hen was given to Olive Oyl’s brother Castor, by their uncle, Lubry Kent. Rubbing her head gave a person luck, so Castor wanted to go to the casinos on Dice Island and break the bank. They hired Popeye to sail them to Dice Island (that was his first appearance, in the Thimble Theatre newspaper strip)

After Castor got rich by gambling on Dice Island, the owners sent their hoodlum to the ship to kill them, and he shot Popeye 15 times in the chest at point blank range (pausing to reload, no doubt.) Popeye fell backwards into the hold and they thought he was a goner. But Bernice came to him and he rubbed her head all night long! By morning, he rubbed enough magic luck out of her so he could not be killed any more. That’s where he got his invulnerability, long before spinach was introduced.
