I would like to know if I buy a wireless modem for my laptop to use when away, could this also be used for my home computer when I am home and not requiring the laptop.

Yes you will just have to buy the PCI card with the antenna for your desktop. check out newegg.com

If that piece of hardware connects using USB port, then yes it'll work on both the laptop and desktop. Otherwise if it is a "cardbus adapter" or goes in the PCMCIA slot, then most likely your PC won't have that slot to be able to use that.
