At a bar with live music, is it ok to sit in the back and forget the people partying?

This evening I was at a bar to hear some music. I sneaked in early so I didn't have to pay cover charge. I lurked about and finally sat down in the back to hear some music. I made small talk with a musician and with the bartender (I bought two beers, and I tipped her too). I left peacefully. Was this behavior acceptable? Am I doing something wrong by not networking (or more bluntly trying to get a girl's phone number)?

You wanted to hear music, and you did that. There are no rules stating that just because you are at a bar you have to try to pick up chicks.
