like dean said, stay clear of dell. they have decent computer, but when something goes wrong with it you'll have a hard time getting it worked on. they make their computers so that when something goes wrong you have to send it to them. most local shops won't even touch them. HP's aren't bad but i alway reccomend the eMachine. it is very reliable, easy to upgrade new things into it and easy to work on as if you built it yourself. i bought one 4 years ago that was a pentium3, upgraded the ram in it, harddrives in it and put dvd burners in along with it being very fast on the net. it was upgraded to XP Pro. this should tell you how good the are. you can get them at walmart and best buy. not sure where else. they come with plenty of everything to last you for year without having to upgrade a thing like 1gig of memory, 160GB harddrive, dvd burner , LCD monitor and list goes on. the price around here in indiana for this package is $500 ready to go out of the box!!!

Stay away from Dell , they have had support and reliability issues. HP yes They are good. E machines is a part of Gateway and also good..No matter what you buy get a big external hard drive and save your files to that and back it up daily to a second drive. I build custom pcs for people that can afford a custom system and I always advise a back up drive. Also make sure you get a good UPS for reserve power to shut down the pc when the power goes out. Feel free to contact me.

I recommend a Dell or HP but more importantly I would use Linux OS apposed to Windows OS the interface is not as easy to navigate as Windows, but it is more stable than Windows.
