I would suggest that you get the CD or download UBUNTU at http://www.ubuntu.com. This up to date operating system is free plus you get all the software you will ever need FREE!!!. If you have 256MB RAM (or more) get the full version. If less than 256MB RAM get XUBUNTU.

If you are speaking about the OS itself and not the hardware: First I would use the link below to see if your system can handle XP. You must also make sure you have a copy of the 98 disk to use when you update to XP. It will be needed each time you 'reinstall' XP. Next you could try looking around your local stores. With Vista coming out now XP is sure to drop in price, or people may be selling XP to buy Vista (not as likley as they will need the Xp if they get the update version)

If you mean the hardware and all then you will need to look either at getting a refurbished/used computer or buying the needed parts to upgrade your exsisting system. I have found it is often cheaper to buy the used/referbished computer then it would be to upgrade all your hardware..

If you're using windows 98, then your pc is probably at least 6 years old. I'd consider buying a whole new machine instead of upgrading to xp when the pc might not last much longer.

I also think you should upgrade the whole machine because XP may not run too well on it. And their isnt a way to get XP cheap unless you some how get a pirated copy.
