I personally think so.
Look at the Red Hot Chili Peppers, they became popular, But they actually have TALENT and ORIGINALITY. Same with Metallica. I think they became more popular than they expected to but they DIDN'T SELL OUT!!! (Contrary to popular belief)

I think most people mistake "selling out" for "getting popular." If you can find any interview from either band which states that they wouldn't sign to a major record label, then you can call them sellouts. If not, then they're just a popular band which a lot of people like.

Kid, Metallica sold out before you were born! You don't understand because you never heard them before it happened. The black album was their crossover album, and their final good one. Same for RHCP's sellout album Blood Sugar Sex Magik....everything else since then is radio fluff.

Point blank, if you've heard of them through television or radio, they sold out.

i've got taken a liking to the lively sound in spite of the incontrovertible fact that it relatively is wonderful how commercial they're.they bounce on the promotional possibilities or maybe admitted as quickly as,contradicting an before "we are in it for the followers" deal via exclaiming they had to "Pay" for This Ain't a Scene to climb up the charts.

I dont really like them but heres my opinion.

No, they're not sell outs. First off, they have their own music, and i for one dont think they sound extremely original but then again they dont sound like every other band either. They got really big and people hate them now, but i mean, bands NEED to get big in order to continue their music careers. Plus, they big because of people, so they have no say on if they get big or not. Overall i think that they are not sell outs, they just get more attention then they should.

Oh boy...I could easily give you an angry 10 page response to this.....becoming popular does not equal selling out. If a band is truly that talented and has good material, then naturally they will become very well known and have many fans and it will just make sense to sign to a larger label because it gives them the opportunity to make more music, not just that but so it sounds better when it's recorded.

If you like a band only because they aren't signed to a major label, that's just as bad as liking them just because they are big. And if you dont' like a band because they're signed to a major label ,then you're obviously not in it for the music, you're in it for the image and hype of who's more mainstream and who's more hardcore. Music is music regardless of the fame of the band. If a band didn't get signed, they'd probably end up giving up their musical career and then you wouldn't hear of them anyway. Can't people just be happy for the success of musicians and like their music because of the MUSIC?

The Red Hot Chili Peppers, my friend, did not just "become" popular. I can't tell you how many f*cking people I know are like "dani california is their breakthrough hit" i mean come on they've been huge since the 80s, they've just released more and more amazing stuff so they get more popular. That's not the same as selling out. Flea still goes nuts on the bass, John still cranks out guitar solos, Chad still drums powerfully and Anthony Kiedis is still as insane as ever. And popular or not, I wouldn't have them any other way. Bands get popular for a reason.

Now, as for Metallica, they did become popular because they were good, even though their material, i admit, did change slightly over the years. But that's another story.

Anyway...back to the ridiculous base of your question: Fallout Boy and My Chemical Romance.
Fall out Boy has only recently changed their sound with their new CD "Infinity on High". If you want, you can say THAT'S selling out because they're giong away from their true sound to make more "mainstream" stuff. Honestly, what's wrong with mainstream? Led Zeppelin is one of the most mainstream rock bands. everyone knows who they are because they're so good. Fall Out Boy just happened to get LUCKY--something GOOD happened to them, they got discovered--but that doesn't mean they sold out (up until recently, like I said)
Let's say there's a girl out there who really like's FOB's music. Despite the fact that people insult her constantly because they maybe think they're emo or are judgmental or whatever, but she may not have known about them before they were signed. it doesn't mean anything bad about her, just that she hadn't heard of them. Let's say she really likes their music, she enjoys it, she has fun listening to it...what's wrong with that? She found out abotu them, is that really so bad? Instrumentally, well they're not that great but they've got some good songs that most people out there haven't even heard of.

Finally, My Chemical Romance. i f ucking HATE it when people compare them to Fall Out Boy. They are NOT similar AT ALL. My Chemical Romance actually has guitar solos and their lyrics read as poetry. They actually try to make music, and they definitely have succeeded in many songs people don't even bother to listen to because they're too busy labelling them and writing them off because of one song.

It also irks me that people assume you, the asker, are young or weren't around when metallica came out...how do they know that? Just more judging.

You say bands these days have no originality? I say fans write them off too quickly. The pop scene is so much worse, but all people pay attention to is how horrible that one song is and oh maybe one of their songs is sad? Or they wear a black shirt? Then they must be emo and suck. That's real intelligent.

When I heard from my daughter, that the lead singer of Fallout Boy said he didn't like his fat fans, i hated them from that time on!! And I agree with you... I am not a RHCP fan, but at least they are original,to the core. Same with Metallica.

FOB and MCR kind of did sell out because before their major releases no one knew who they were.

No. They achieved their goal... to become rich and famous. Like Metallica said, "We sell out each and every concert".
