Flee before it erupts! You won't escape the pyroclastic flows once they come at you. You'll end up burned alive.

I was caught up in the major eruption of Tungurahua in Ecuador on the night of August 16/17 last year. I had to run for 45 minutes with stones falling around my head and smashing through roofs (see the Wikipedia article, which has two factual errors but is more accurate than any news site such as Yahoo! or BBC).
If you allowed e-mail I could have sent you the account I wrote next day. The town of Banos was gradually re-occupied but many children were sent to live with relatives elsewhere.
If you, or anyone else that reads this, wants to read my first-hand account, e-mail me: brianinchina2003@yahoo.co.uk

If it is a major eruption from a major volcano and you live in close proximity to the eruption there is nothing to do other than just wait to die.

Evacuate the place immediately...gather your belongings depending on how much time you have. The community will probably alert the town/city after it erupts and tell you where the safest place to go is.

Run like hell. It won't do you any good, but hopefully you'll be so tired you won't have the opportunity to realize that at any minute you'll be lit up like a Roman candle.
