What are the differences between There and Second Life?

I'm thinking of joining either There or Second Life, but am not sure which one. Is one better than the other or do they each have their own advantages/disadvantages?

there is no cost for second life so why not try it out but be forewarned it is awfully addictive and you could spend half your real life there.
