I use carpet cleaning machines and it looks good for a week then they come back.

Try this: club soda poured straight on the stain. White paper towels with a stack of newspaper on top. Stand on the stain with your full weight several minutes. Works like magic!

The problem with carpet cleaning machines is that they leave a soap residue. That in turn will attract more dirt to the spots that were already cleaned. I agree with the person who recommends club soda. If it is a large area then I would call Chem-dry carpet cleaning service, available through your local Home Depot store. Chem-dry uses a process that uses less water, no soapy residue and a chemical reactions that is comparable to the soda water technique. You get to use your carpet sooner (1-2hrs compared to 1-2 day)
