It's clear that Dungy is more white than black -- his mother was white and his father was obviously not a pure black African. I'm thinking the arithmetic makes him at least 60 - 70% Caucasian. So why again do we keep talking about how he might be the first black coach to win the Super Bowl? Maybe he'll just be the 30th-whatever WHITE coach to win it?

I think your are missing the point. Biologically speaking, "race" is a hopelessly vague concept. From a practical standpoint, the term "black" refers to an American social group with a particular status and history withiin the country. As we know, this history contains a long bout with discrimination. Now within this history of discimination there was a high premium placed upon "pure white blood". Consequently any person containing any noticeable fraction of african heritage was considered black (because of the fact that they were too tainted by that blood to be white, which was a "pure" condition). If a person appeared black at all, they were considered black, that was the social reality. Thus any such person belonged to the social group "black". Discussions about historical black acheivments are designed to celebrate the waning influence of discrimination within society that allows blacks to acheive more than any time before. Historically, this coache's complexion would have been a barrier because it would have defined him as "black" and less deserving. Now it is not a barrier.

Honestly, I think its the tightly-curled hair. He (dungy) and most blacks shave their hair to conceal their African heritage. The question is if he had straight hair would he be the subject of making history in the NFL? probably not as much.

it's a hopeless effort to promote the black race. If he were all black, he couldn't annunnciate or carry on an intelligent conversation.

Mr Dungy's color is irrelevent. He is a head coach.
Our culture loves to pidgeon-hole people.
Because he is dark-skinned he is considered black.
I wish him all the best tomorrow.

just like when Halley Berry won "best actress" for monsters ball. such a big thing was made of it, her white mother was her date. I think the media should start seeing people as humans, its just getting silly.
They say in 50 years, whites will be a minority in America, then its payback time!!!

In the US, there's something called the "One Drop Rule". It states that even if you have only one black great grandparent (making you one eigth black, or an "octoroon") you are still considered black.

just because one of the parents is more predominately more black than white or vise-versa, doesnt mean that he is less black than white..it just depends on the genes of the parents
