The homework help is a wonderful section, but it is totaly abused by people who simply want answers to their homework that they can cut and paste and present as their own. So many well-meaning people provide thoughtful, insightful, well-researched answers. But they are not doing these people any favors by doing their work for them. Would you do your homework for your 8th grader and then let him/her turn it in? Give these people a direction to move in, and few hints and ideas, but don't do their work for them.

There really is no difference between helping someone here and helping them in person. But if my eighth grader asked for help on his homework, I would show him *how* to do it, not do it for him. And actually, I'd say most of the questions here are legit, but it just irks me everytime I see a question where people boldly ask for just the answers so they can cut and paste them.

I agree Liza. I am new to this, but as a math teacher I like to look to see if I can help anyone out of a rut. But I have noticed soooo many people just putting questions up about here is the problem and "I need the answer. Please show all of your work and then check your answer." Those people I just blow off! I am willing to give someone a hand, but not a hand out!!

What is the difference of helping someone on here or helping one of your friends in person? Just because you know someone you would be more willing to help than someone who may not have that kind of help at home. I have asked questions on here for help and gotten a lot of help from it! I don't think it is abused by as many people as you think it is. Sometimes people really struggle on things that are easier for others and it can go the other way as well. I think it is great that people put answers up here to homework. I like to read through the answers and see what everyone has come up with myself. It is interesting to see like 5 ways to solve a question.

Most of these questions put here are for fun, and if I notice that the question is a homework question, I tell them where they can go to find the answer and learn, or in arithmatic, I tell them the formula and give examples. If one person put 12 questions in one night, I think we would catch it.

I generally provide a link to an explanation to HOW to work out the question that they have or explain how to go about it.

Well, I think these little homework cheaters know their human nature. We know it alls are easily led into giving answers and I have been guilty of it on more than one occasion.
