The earth's crust is made up of plates that ride on top of the magma deep in the earth. The continents ride on these plates and there are other plates like the India plate.
Where two plates meet is called a fault like the San Adreas fault in California. One plate moves against another plate at the fault line.
At some fault lines one plate is moving under another heavier plate causing folding of the upper plate. The India plate is folding up causing the Himalaya mountains.
At other faults, the plates are sinking like at the Marinas trench, which is the deepest part of the ocean.
The most active faults are along the Pacific plate which causes earthquakes in California, Alaska, Japan, Indonesia, etc.
