Football can certainly increase school spirit, but by what degree would depend on a number of factors. For instance the type of university & the demographic make up of the student body.

Older students, & ones who may be married won't have much interest generally, & football games are basically social events where students & alums can cheer on their school

Seeing old friends & meeting new people is the foundation for positive school spirit. Before adding a team it would be prudent to assess the likelyhood of attracting enough players w a commitment to playing.

Most people don't realize the amount of time players devote to practices & related activities, while trying to maintain decent grades.

A football program is NOT cheap!! Fundraising opportunities would be best focused on local businesses & alumni.

Weight the cost of your prize (is it a $10 present certificate or a chocolate bar?) with the era of time spent at video games and spirit activities.
