Definitely! Just like we respect our soldiers in uniform. ~not the ones who participated in the Abu Gharib prison scandal. Would like to say that you don't respect what they did but still respect them. But the report said that it ranged on sadistic & had to discharge some. But in general, yes, I respect those in uniforms & elders unless one personally gives me a reason to feel otherwise. But then part of me still wants to be respectful even though they make it hard to get past their not acting deserving.
I also believe respect has to be a two-way street.

After working for five years as an investigator and legal assistant in a criminal defense law firm, my respect has gone downhill in a major way. Everyday people would come into our office with broken bones, bruises, and teeth knocked out. There was one instance in which officers peed on an individual. In some cases, I'm sure that extreme force may be warranted....BUT....I've seen too much on a daily basis for years that I know there is definitely an abuse of power. Of course, at the time, the city I lived in was the 3rd worst in the nation for police brutality.

I do realize that there ARE good cops out there and it's always the few rotten ones that give the rest a bad name. My mom worked for years as a dispatcher for a sherriff office. She always said that the egos of cops are the worst.

These people as a general rule put there lives on the line for us on a daily basses for little or substandard pay they are due our respect in most case's!
Law enforcement is a necessary evil in today's society if we did not have them we would be just like the old west days before there was law officer to protect and serve!
We are a lawful society governed by law and ethics and every group of people have there "dregs" there controlling of this sect of society is there contribution and respect is commanded not demanded!
True ever agency has there bad apples but i would venture to say that "the average office is human just like you or me at the end of the day"!

When Ia m not fighting in UN Peacekeeping Forces. I chase storms and work with local and state cops. And, they let me speed and know my car and will not pull me over. Since I am usually heading to a military base or where a storm just hit helping out as much as I can.

Cops and Storm Chasers make the perfect combination. And, they pay for my food to after we are done with whatever emergency came up.

So, it is actually what state and county and city where you live is what truely counts.

I DO!! My cousin is a police officer. One of my best friends is married to a wonderful man who is a police officer. Plus, I've had help from police officers in my lifetime. They are willing to risk their lives daily, on our streets, to protect us and make us feel safe. It is a shame that instead of publicly recognizing the many good cops out there, we only hear about the few bad apples loudly on the news and in the media. I BACK THE BLUE!

I respect the fact that they have one of the toughest jobs. Who else is going to watch over ALL of the crap, trouble violent acts, injustice to litte ones. Just walk a mile in their shoes, heck try 50 feet.

Not me. Why? Because I have several friends who are cops. According to them (and my personal experience supports this) about 10-20% of police officers are good guys trying to improve their community. They're dedicated to the job and they don't abuse their power.

The other 80-90%, however, are control freaks. They get off on the authority they have over people, and they use every opportunity to flaunt it.

It's not the "bad minority" of LEOs that makes the rest look bad; it's the GOOD minority that gives us an excuse to ignore the rest.

Police are public servants and spend most of their time giving advice and helping people. Many policemen never draw their weapon. Protect and serve is the motto. Unfortunately the times when most of us remember them it is unpleasant.

I do, I do! It's a shame that the minority of lousy police officers (and of course there are some), makes everyone else look bad.
