i have an alvarez acoustic guitar. i managed to take out the old string but i can't put in the new string because the bridge pin won't stay in the bridge.

There are a couple of things that might be causing this, here they are from best to worst:

1) Hold the pin in until you have tension on the string. This will usually solve the problem. If that doesn't work, then
2) Buy "oversize" pins from a shop. Sometimes the pins and/or holes wear a bit and oversized pins will satisfy the need. Should you still have problems you should
3) Take the guitar to a good repair shop and explain your problem. They will do a couple of things. First, they'll get the bridge holes wet with a few drops of a water/glycerin solution. This will sometimes expand the wood and give you tighter fitting pins. Failing that...
4) They will fill the bridge holes with tapered pegs and redrill the bridge with the correct tapered hole.

Many times this problem reflects the environment in which the guitar is stored. Guitars must have a 50% to 55% relative humidity which is usually only attainable by using an in-case humidifier (about $20) and keeping the guitar in it's case when not being played.

Are you laying your guitar flat on the floor (table)? Put all the strings on loose and then tighten each one into the little slot one at a time.
