The same time because they saw the fruit and named it orange because the color of the fruit looked like it should be called orange.

I would say the color orange came first because when the English language was created, there were more orange things than just oranges. English came from northern europe, where there are no oranges...so the fruit name orange probably came into existence after people travelled to a tropical climate for the first time and saw oranges.

Foods and colors have many names in many languages. In this case, the roots for both appear to come from the same source....possibly Dravidian (southern India). This gives credit to your theory one was named for the other.

As to which came first...most believe it was the fruit. In many old languages, the color orange was simply named yellowred, since those were the two colors blended to make it. As the orange (fruit) trade spread, so too did the name for the color.

That's the theory anyway.

Actually, the orange was first called the "Dark Yellow", but the marketing people knew that wouldn't catch on.
