I recently bought 4 silver Reed and Barton dessert cups at a garage sale. Three of them polished up with no problems, but one has a "stain" on it. It looks almost like a streak of blue flame going up the side of the cup. Does anyone know what causes this? And is there a polish that will remove it?

Try plain old white toothpaste-might take a little elbow grease, but it will come out!

I collect silver and silverplate flatware and holloware. After polishing over 1000 pieces, I have found a couple things which work extremely well and seem to cause no damage to the silver. One option for tough dark stains is to use "wadding polish' in lambs wool. This is soft and gentle doesn't generally scratch. To buff it out to a brilliant shine go to your local hardware store and ask for metal polishing compound and make sure you get the one rated for precious metals. Put a little of it on a soft chamois and rub gently. You'll be able to see your reflection as clearly as if it were a mirror when you're through.

We use Wrights Silver Polish. It would not harm the fantastic silver and makes it shine like new. besides it places an invisible coat that delays the tarnish from returning so which you do not could polish in many situations. you nonetheless could polish. It delays - not prevents.
