There are several ways you can do it. But Honestly. Wireless is the easiest way to go. Hence.....WIRELESS. The way your talking about you have to manually run all the lines from one point (router) to all the computers in your home. If you don't have a basement or crawl space. That could be a horrible task to take upon yourself. I'm a Telecommunications installer. I do Cable, telephone, Internet, wired and wireless internet, and Alarm systems. I know how much a pain it can be. Trust me. Get wireless. Around here. Central Ohio USA, you can buy a Netgear wireless router at Best buy for $39.99 and then buy either USB wireless adapters or PCI wireless network card (for desktops) or get a network car for you Laptop (if it's not set up already for wireless built in. So for under $100 you can set up 2 computers on your internet connection. honestly...the way your trying to do it. Doesn't sound like it's gonna work.

okay..my man does all the computer networking for Wal*Mart ...simply put he works for Wal*Mart Home Office..
He says that in order to do that you would have to make a cross over cable to link up between pc and laptop, then set connection to share internet connection off laptop. But you prob have no clue what that means..(as he sits here telling me what to type) Easier way would be to go to Wal*Mart and get a Linksys Router (even though you said you didnt want too) he said to look them up at www.walmart.com. The cross over cable isnt found at stores it has to be made or bought from a telecom vendor, example Graybar, Anixter.
Hope this makes some sense or helps.

Actually you can, but you will need a special ethernet cable called a cross-over cable.
Furthermore you will need to set up static IP's and share the internet connection on the computer that has a internet connection. However setting it up can be tricky.

If you have 2 network cards in your desktop you can set up internet sharing on the desktop. Problem is that the desktop would have to be on for the laptop to have internet.

THE CARD IS MENT FOR THE LAPTOP. YOU NEED TO AFFILIATE WITH ANOTHER INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER LIKE AT&T AND GET THEM TO HOOK YOU UP. YOU HAVE TO BUY ADDITIONAL STUFF. SORRY. THE BEST ADVICE I COULD GIVE YOU IS TO DOWNLOAD THE STUFF YOU WANT, SAVE IT TO A CD, AND USE IT ON THE DESKTOP.

You'll need a router, or an ethernet hub

You can't do this without a Router or a Hub.
