Had shoes on continually for 5 to 6 years. Not riding much for the past couple of years, and I removed the shoes. She's in the pasture during the day, walker a couple of times a week, stalled at night (clean and dry). Removed shoes, and that is when the abcesses started occurring...
Common?

Yes, this is because your horses hooves are weakened when you remove the shoes. While your horse was shod he was able to move freely while the steel protected his hoof. Horses that are left barefoot adapt naturally to the rough terrain. I'd talk to your vet and farrier to come up with a treatment plan. Your vet may be able to drill a hole in the hoof to drain the abscess infection. Soaking your horses hoof in warm water and apple cider vinegar will help soften the coronary band so pus can escape if your vet is unable to drill.
What ever the case- check with your vet. Abscesses are painful and shouldn't be taken lightly.

Yeah, you shouldn't remove shoes if you had them on for that long but there are nutrition powder or pills for her to take (to build up her hoof strength) if you want to keep her without shoes. But for now, keep the hoof clean, look out for twigs, stones, whatever, and call the vet or a good farrier

No, it should actually decress the chances of an abcess. Sounds like she's stepping on small rocks and getting bruises. The walking willhelp to clear out the infection because of constant blood flow to the area. I would have the vet check and see what is causing these.

if the shoes have been on that long then they will be sore and tender and she could have stepped on something. My friends horse had his shoes on for 15 years and when they took them off he couldnt walk on cememnt for a while. but hes feet toughend yp. i reccomned putting iodine on their feet (BUT NOT THE CORINARY BAND) and spray it nderneath the foot too. This hardens their feet so it will help toughin them up (use 7% iodine)
