Interesting question. When I worked in Alaska (hippies breed like rabbits up there), the car of choice was a rusted out hatchback and Toyota light trucks covered in mud and pretentious bumperstickers.
I live in Texas now and primarily the conservative vehicle (not surprisingly) is a truck or an SUV. But you go to Austin and the liberal still drive hatchbacks and 3rd rate Volvoes.

I don't know about it expressing my political ideology (moderate to liberal Independent), but my kids sure think it speaks volumes about my age. After years of driving sports cars, I purchased a van. Like a soccer mom van, except I'm 50 and my kids don't play soccer. Shrug - I do a lot of shopping and wanted the room. My oldest (21) says only soccer moms and old people drive vans, and since neither one of them play soccer I must really just be old now. Nice huh? Anyway, I support Hillary for President and can't really say what I think about George Bush without being in violation for profanity. Hmm...I didn't even own a van when I was a hippie...

Seems like we're dealing mainly in stereotypes here.
Fat Cats in Suburbans or Hummers.
Liberals in hybrids.
But the universal truth is a Trans Am is just making up for a tiny male unit.

Liberals are more likely to drive fuel-efficient cars, as representative of our environmental values -- more liberals have tried hybrids, electric cars, etc. Liberals are also more likely to drive foreign cars, largely because they are especially fuel-efficient, but to conservatives this is sometimes seen as a sign of not supporting Our Country. Conservatives are more likely to drive gas-guzzlers on the argument that, as long as *they* can afford the gas, why should anyone else be able to tell them what to drive? This could be seen as a fairly isolationist stance.

An uber right winger asked me if I was a far left liberal because I was driving a Convertible Volvo.
I AM a far left liberal, so what you drive must speak volumes.
Communists do drive, and old Czech Scodas and Tatras are awesome!

I drive a NEW red Mazda 6 and it's says I am the daughter of a well paid Republican family that loves me and likes to buy me gifts after they pay their huge tax bill to support lazy liberals.
