"Word" means "okay", "I agree", "hell yeah", "damn straight"...things on that level, but thats when u say it on a more calm and relaxed laid back level but when u say it in a questioning tone then it can me "for real?" or "are u serious?!". Urbandictionary.com is a good place to find any (mostly) slang termonology....but i didnt need it to know what "word" means lol. but i looked it up for u on there, just click the link below for any affirmation on the word and any other slangs and termonology.

They are saying that they agree with you like you would say" that movie was so awsome!" and they would say " word" as in " I think the same thing."

When someone just says "word" I believe it's their way of trying to be an individual in a conformist sort of way, when they are saying "Hey! How are you?" It's awesome that you didn't know, I wish I didn't know too. The way people do things and why will always be a mystery.

It means they are too stupid to think of something that makes sense.

They are letting you know that they are still there and are listening to you, but dont know what to say. So they say "word". As in, their intention is to say a word right there but apparently, they are not so bright.

it's ghetto slang. I think it just means that you acknowledge what they said and agree with them.
Such usage is incorrect and hopefully does not end up in any dictionary. Your teacher should point out that slang is undesireable and using it makes you look like a moron.
