Wow! I feel really horrible when I see such people. I often wonder what kind of life they have, or if they have loving parents. To me, this is one of the most horrific sites to see...especially with teens. It truly makes you wonder why they feel so bad about themselves. I would love nothing more than to help someone, who is willing to accept help. Often it seems as though they may be too far gone, like the point of no return. Horribly sad. I would never wish these conditions on my worst enemies!

Cutting can become an addiction. Your body releases endorphins when your body feels pain that gives you a natural sort of high. I think statistically almost 90% of people who cut have been physically or sexually abused.
I started cutting myself when I was seventeen, as a "poser" I thought. I just wanted to see if I could do it when we learned about it in our psychology class. It became an addiction for me for over a year. Only years later did I discover that most addicted cutters have been abused. I myself had been sexually abused repeatedly when I was a young child.
In my opinion, anyone who has multiple cuts or scars is a serious cutter, whether you think they are faking or not. It is an outward way to express inward pain. The people you think are doing it for attention, probably are. They want someone to notice the physical problem since no one noticed the internal emotional problem stemming from abuse.
If you know someone who is cutting, you should try to be there for them in any way you can. Strong, emotionally supportive friends are very important to the recovery process of a cutter.

Having had a student who was a "cutter" I would answer that I believe she had a lot of guilt and that this was a form of self-punishment. She was a brilliant writer, and had been encouraged by me to begin writing a book on her philosophy of life. She began this book; however, at some point burned it...another self-destructive act. Eventually she nominated me as the teacher who most influenced her life.
Because of my strong faith in God, I was continually praying for her that she would be comforted by God and that she would come to faith in him. She needed love and concern even more than most; yet at the same time, I believe she was doing things that were undermining her sense of self worth. Probably there were some wrongdoings in her life for which she was legitimately guilty mixed in with a sense of guilt about other matters where, in actuality, she was quite innocent.

I think there are many reasons. Essentially I don't think you would cut just for attention; there has to be an underlying cause (why do they want the attention in the first place). Most probably cut to relieve stress. I know what it's like to feel numb and sometimes anything feels better than nothing, but I couldn't do that to myself (the blood for one thing!).

I had a young friend that was a cutter and she pulled her hair out too. I talked a lot to her and told her how much we all loved her and didn't want to see her hurt herself. She went to counseling and got help but I also know what she was going through in her life. If you see someone you don't know with the scars, don't judge because you have no idea what that person is going through!! If it is where you can, offer advice.

I think that this is someone who is reaching out. They are someone who may not feel like they have any control in their life, and that by cutting or some other way of causing pain to themselves, this is something in their lives that they can control.
One of my friends back in High School was a cutter, and her parents were very overbearing, if she ever brought a B home on a test, she would get grounded, she had to start every sport she played, be first chair in band, she had to be perfect in every way. Eventually after the pressure got to be so much, she started cutting. It was her way of finding something in her life she could control.
Most of these people are not insane, or freaks, they are just reaching out in the only ways they know how.

People that hurt themselves have been so hurt that they go numb and to feel anything is better than being numb. All the judgmental people who say such negative things are the kind of people that cause the pain and then blame the victim.
If someone hurts themselves for attention that is a sign their heart is hurting and they need. To all you cold hearted A-oles,You are the very same, numb, but you lash out instead of in.

I feel like these people are suffering mentally. I feel for these people. I think they do it as a way to relieve stress and work through problems just as others may yell or scream. It's not healthy, of course. I don't think it's for people to feel sorry for them. If they are seeking attention it may just be for someone to understand them. All humans just want someone to understand them and validate their feelings.

There are better things in life to die from like falling off a mountain bike, cliff or get eaten by a shark. That is put yourself in danger of death from something you could die from. So actually life live on a knifes edge or life live on the edge.

It's not sane.
For some unknown reason in America our popular culture brainwashes the youngest ones into destroying themselves through emotionally torturing and psychologically scarring violent music, visually desensitising movies, sending them a message that they have to kill anything that is good and wholesome in themselves, and that this is a normal part of growing up.
It's defiantly not sane.
