Batting Order
Damon - Speed and some pop to lead it off.
Jeter - Greatest 2-hole hitter of all-time.
Abreu - Incredible On-Base Machine.
A-Rod - Power is always there, 2007 he will rebound.
Giambi - Power to back A-Rod and it splits the lefties.
Matsui - Just a great professional hitter, a joy to watch.
Posada - Still has some spark left in that bat.
Mientkiewicz/Phillips - No matter which one is in the lineup, this is the right place.
Cano - How scary is it that he nearly won a batting title hitting in the 9-hole? INCREDIBLE!
I figure this lineup looks pretty solid. You want to split the righties and lefties up a bit and you know Jeter is in the 2-hole and Cano is at the bottom to set the dish on the way back around. The only variables--in my mind--exist between the five and eight spots in the lineup, lots of room for shifting in there depending on hot streaks.
Rotation
Mussina - He has to be your ace, especially after the season he had, he is clearly a team leader and the leader of the rotation.
Wang - There are less injury concerns with Wang, so the club will have less pressure on them giving him a few extra starts over Pettitte.
Pettitte - The lefty returns to New York with high hopes and a few more miles on the tires. A perfect number 3 at this stage in his career.
Igawa - I'm giving him the push over Pavano for the 4-hole b/c I think Pavano is going to be eased back in a bit...he is awfully fragile.
Pavano - Not too many starts early on in the season and can be dumped out for the occassional garbage start out of the 'pen if he's hurting...which he probably will be...by about April 12th.
I didn't include any of the rookies (Phillips or Sanchez) b/c it just isn't the Yankees style to pass on letting the veterans at least start the season in the rotation. Do I think that will be the Yankees rotation all year...oh hell no. But to start the year, that looks about right. As far as Clemens. I like to figure neither team will have him until June either way...so no point in factoring him in yet.

I am having trouble with who Joe will put into the cleanup spot. I will assume that A-Rod will put up A-Rod like numbers
Damon (L)
Jeter (R)
Giambi (L)
A-Rod (R)
Abreau (L)
Matsui (L)
Cano (L)
Posada (S)
Mientkiewicz (L)
Lots of left handed batters, one reason why Melky will be so useful. And it's good that Jorge bats better from the right than left, to mix things up a bit
Rotation:
as it stands with a "healthy" Pavano (I'll believe that when i see it- I second your ha!)
Mussina (R)
Pettitte (L)
Wang (R)
Igawa (L)
Pavano (R)
don't look for Clemens until mid-season, if you see him at all

The previous answers are OK except some had 3 lefties in a row (a no-no) and Cano batting 9th (?). So this is it:
Damon (L)
Jeter (R)
Abreu (L)
A-Rod (R)
Giambi (L) assuming his wrist has healed
Matsui (L)
Posada (S)
Cano (L)
Mientkiewicz (L)
The rotation should go
Mussina
Pettitte
Wang
Igawa
Pavano
This way you put the veterans at the top and take pressure off the young pitchers. You also alternate lefty and righty.

1.damon
2.jeter
3.abreu
4.a-rod
5.giambi
6.matsui
7.cano
8.posada
9.mentkawicz(srry about spelling)
The reason i didnt have a-rod batting 3 is because that is to many left-handed hitters in a row with abreu, giambi, matsui, cano, posada, and meinkawicz, and back to damon. they could put a left handed specialist out of the bullpen to take care of them.
the rotation
1.wang
2.mussina
3.pettite
4.pavano
5.igawa
Bullpen
rivera (closer)
farnworth (set up man)
proctor (middle relief pitcher)
vizcaino (middle relief pitcher)
meyers (left-handed specialist)
henn, britton, rasner, bruney (early releif pitchers)
beam&wilson (long releif pitchers)
karstens (spot starter)

Matsui - pop
Abreu - less pop, but spd & ave
