I am not very good with the rubber nasal aspirator...I am a first time mom, and find that I don't get anything out when I do it! I have read saline helps? Any advice would be great, thanks!

Buy some 100% saline nasal drops, not medication added. place a drop or two in the nostril and let it sit for a minute. The stick the aspirator in with no air in it and let go, you may have to move it around to get all sides of the nose. sometimes you won't get anything, but you should suction a few times in each nostril to get the saline out.

Try putting a couple drops of saline in her nose first and wait about 10 minutes before trying to suck anything out. This gives the saline time to soften everything up and start coming out.

Squeeze the bulb, put it up her nostril and release. Empty into a kleenex and repeat. It gets easier with practice.

If you're not comfortable with or don't have any saline, give her a bath first and then aspirate. The moisture from the bath will loosen everything up as well.

Good luck and congratulations.

lol.... I know how that goes....... ARG.... frustrating isn't it? Try doing it after bath time... because it helps loosen things up.... so when you do finally get your chance at a good suction.... its more effective. I have found this is be a two person job. My husband would hold our son in place........ and I would do it really quick. You will find she might be a little upset right after wards... but babies get over it pretty quick. Also try and limit the number of times you do it. I only do it in extreme cases when I am worried it is restricting his breathing. Using a Humidifier can help things work there way out naturally. I have never used saline drops.... but other mothers say they work great. Also..... either raise the mattress in the crib up just a inch or two on one side so they are sleep on a incline.... which will help the nose drain naturally.... or have her nap in a swing or such.... so the nose can drain on its own also. Good luck!

I do 2 squirts in each nasal of saline solution. Then I squeeze it away from the baby- mine always hated the air blowing on them. Put it in the nasal then let go. Pull it out and squirt it onto a tissue.
Then the baby can breath- it is a wonderful thing.

If you are not getting anything out you could use some saline to help loosen things up a bit. That could be why nothing is coming out. Also, if your baby is congested try to put some books or blankets underneath the mattress in his/her crib to raise the head of the mattress up a bit. It will help the baby sleep a bit better. Good luck!

they say the right way to do it is to plug one side ofthe babies nose and suck out the other and it should take 5 seconds blahblah blah ok heres what i do yes saline helps but babies dont like it so i put the bulb thingy in there jigle it around a little bit then suck it out if you dont get any that way take a q tip and verry gentle put it up there and swab around this will make their nose run and your garanteed to get some thing then if all else fails try the saline they dont like it but it does help put one or 2 drops in their nose let it sit for about 10 seconds and suck away good luck if you still need more help consolt your pediatrition

Also, I am not sure how old your child is. But my daughter will scream if she even sees the aspirator coming toward her. To this day when I have to do it. I have to take a blanket and wrap her arms in it. It is hard to get a good suction if they are moving all around!
