Be more concerned about what is in it and less about the brand.
As far as brands, Acer, HP, Gateway are decent. Toshiba is better. I don't know much about other brands available in Canada ... if you see a computer you like but aren't sure about brand, then come home and research it first.
Avoid compaq and emachines.
Added Note: People I know who own Dell desktops love them. People I know who own Dell laptops get frustrated with them ... keys tend to be too loose, and other problems present.

Components: DON'T get a celeron or sempron processor, anything else will work, though a dual core processor is best if you multi-task.

Get at least 1 gb of Ram, don't settle for less.

Beyond those guidelines, get the best and most you can for your money (i.e. hard drive space, DVD burner, etc.)

well... a toshiba is the greatest, but it would be like i don't know 1500 in canadian dollars, i probably suggest the mac software meets apple( it runs great too like toshiba), it would probably be directly under 1000. like he said stayyyy... away from compaq, and dell too(their software blows out at a certain period of time)
