I prefer the Mac. Why? Because I have used it all my life and personally hate Windows. The GUI of Mac OS X is amazing. It looks good. It's easy to use. It just works the way it's suppose to. I find working on a PC to be cumbersome. Why? Because you don't have as much flexibility when working with files. It's harder to see what you're working on all at once (however that does change in Windows Vista, but only in...what version again?) Windows is expensive. Yes it is. Mac OS X costs less than Microsoft Windows. It even costs less than the cheapest version of Windows Vista, and one version of OS X has every feature that Apple promotes. Sure there is a time when you have to use Windows. You can run Windows on a Mac now, so a Mac is really the only computer you'll ever need.

Both will coexist for a long time.
For the basic user:
macs seem to be easier to use.
For the average user:
Assuming that a user knows what he/she is doing, then both are okay. The main concern with PCs is viruses, but a competent user knows how to keep his system free of them.
For the hardcore geek:
These guys will stick with the PC until it's slower than a mac, which will be never. Macs are not customizable, macs are not faster than PCs, and I don' think Macs will support overclocking.
Finally, if we could have a PC competitor to Microsoft, we might get a good operating system on the PC that'll kill the mac. The macs can't mess up, not even once. If they do release a bad operating system, then it's all over for them. For PCs, if Windows is bad, there's still linux that'll keep it alive. But I personally think both will coexist for a long time.
For gaming, there is only one choice. PC FTW!
For photoshoping, PCs are also faster than macs, for some odd reason. So macs have lost their once-vaunted edge with multimedia.

PC and MAC are not really in a contest. Each fills a specific niche. Mac for graphics and PC for cheap, and readily available games. That is what most people use their PC for anyway. Both can get on the internet, so no problem there. MAC will never sell as much as PC because it is a sigle brand where as PC has many different brands, made by different companies.

Both will co-exist for as long as either of them do. It's only natural for ther to be at least 2 extreme opposites. Hot/cold, right/left, positive/negative, in/out, up/down...you get the picture. For everyone who loves one thing, there're a fair amount of people who hate it. It's just nature.
In the early days, Macs had an advantage in some areas, especially graphics, but that's no longer true, and hasen't been for a long time. Yet, there are still hold-outs who believe or want to believe it's still true. But like someone above mentioned, the Windows OS is a targetted weakness.
Anyway, as has been mentioned, that battle has long been over.

Both Apple and Microsoft target two different markets. The general business market uses PC's because they are cost effective and can easily be repaired. Yes, Macs do break, I support 50-60 Mac's. Apple is even tight on discounts.
PC's give the end user the freedom of option, while Apple still remains very tight fisted on their products.
I support both PC's and MAC's and I still prefer a PC.

That "battle" was settled over 20 years ago.
I'm guessing you haven't heard the news about Betamax either.
