Most Salvation Army places more or less allow you to determine the value of what you have donated yourself. But that receipt is pretty important. Could you go back to where you made the donation, explain the situation, and see if you could get a receipt?

Ethically, could you deduct that amount without a receipt? Probably
Legally, could you deduct it? You would have some problems in an audit situation.

Do you have the donation slip from salvation army ? If you don't you should not use it as a write off. You have no proof you ever donated anything. If you get audited the IRS may dis-allow this decution. You do not need the receipt from where you bought the items, just the slip from the donation site.

I think you have to have receipts if you itemize your deductions. We have payed tithe (to the church) on our income for years now, which is also counted as a charitable donation, but we have never given enough that it was counted as more than the regular allowed deductable for all taxpayers in the short form to make it worth filling in the long form instead.
Also remember that if at some point down the line, you are ever audited they will expect you to have receipts for the last five years of deductions.

i attempt to provide a minimum of a dollar bill each and every time I bypass a bell ringer for the Salvation military. yet when all I actually have is change, that is what I provide. So with assistance from the proper of the season, i have in all likelihood donated a minimum of $20 with assistance from Christmas. no longer an excellent sum, yet about what I donate to the american maximum cancers Society or heart association each and every time i'm getting an envelope contained in the mail.

You should get a receipt , but you can actually claim much more than that about $1200 without receipts, without raising a "red flag"

you can claim it as a charity write off only to a certain amount without a receipt.your amount is o.k. if you claim some large amount ,like a thousand dollars ,then you may have to prove it.

Are you going to use itemize or use standard deduction?

If you use standard deduction, you are not able to claim your donation.
