To have freedom is good thing. Not to have guidance is another and such doesn't necessary comes from opression. Let kids be free, but be a good model to them. It is better than the other way around and I think that's what they are really looking for.

Yes, but this isn't a government issue, this is a parenting issue. Parents allow their children to see themselves as equals to adults, and this is not the case.

My children, well the oldest at this point, say yes sir and no ma'am to all adults. They understand that while Daddy is their friend, he is also Daddy, and makes the rules. These rules are not up for debate, and my house is not a democracy. I love them with all my heart, and want to make sure they are always well taken care of, but will let them know when they did something wrong. And. if they "do the crime, they do the time".

Let's put it this way. My four year old had to go to work with me Friday. I couldn't take the day off, and the daycare has that 24 hour rule regarding fevers. My co-workers were amazed at how well behaved she was the whole day. That, and they were shocked at how when they asked her a question she would say yes ma'am. At one point, she was getting a little unruly. All I said to her in a calm voice was "do we need to go have a talk?" She straightened up right away.

You don't have to be a tyrant to control your kids, you just have to be consistent. I don't think parents assert their authority enough to their children. And, if they don't have to listen to and respect their own parents, why do we think they will listen to any other authority figure they come in contact with?

WOW! What a reaction. For starters we don't have to stand behind a plow and horse. Yes we have more freedom because we have more time! If you would compare the average day and life of a child 50, 25, 10 years ago and what their daily routines were you would see what I mean.

Isn't this what America is all about though. Making it better for the generations to come?

Probably - but it comes from bad parenting.... Give the kid a coupla bucks and let him go to the mall...That way, he is not under your skin while you are trying relax after a hard day at work.

Be their friend - not their parent...that seems to be the philosophy of child rearing today. Let 'em pierce everything, wear baggy britches hanging off their butts, skimpy little tops (to show of that belly-button piercing) and tight clothes. Oh - and be sure you buy that 16 year old a car so you don't have to be a "taxi" service for him.

Unfortunately, what most teens don't realize until they are mature, this isn't freedom.. This is "get outta my hair" parenting....

Yes. Because both parents have to work there is often not enough supervision. In some instances parents want to be friends with their kids or cool to them and so there is a lack of discipline and a disinclination to say "no". Each generation seems to get more and more freedom than the last.
However, you can never generalize.

If Heck yeah we do. Think about they way it was when you were growing up (If you are older). We got the Internet. Think about what we could do on the Internet. We got cell pones. Think about who we could call on a cell phone. Parents spoil us. Giving us the impression we can do what ever we want (which we can). Ummm... what else. If you want to know more E-mail me. I could list tons of things. Not to mention Myspace. But now people are starting to enforce laws and create now ones. So we are loosing alot of freedom we had. But I think its needed. Look at kids who are meeting all these old perverts on Myspace and everything. But if you exercise common sense like me you will be ok.

No, we can never have enough freedom. The problem with our young is we fail to instill the responsibilities and values. Freedoms come with responsibility. Speech, owning a gun,IE etc.

Kids today have waaaay less freedom then we had. They are constantly monitored. When I was a youngin we would go out for hours and no one knew where we were until the streetlights came on. i don't think it's any more dangerous now then it was then, it is just more publisized. I feel bad for today's kids...
