The storebought stuff is so expensive - seems to me I could just process some instant oatmeal (plain of course) in the blender and make my own for pennies, but how would I go about making rice or barley cereal? My baby is six months old. I've tried Malupa and Heinz brands, plus Walmart's store brand, but they're all pretty pricey. Has anyone had sucess making their own?

Thanks all.

You are obviously shopping at the wrong stores. You can buy a big box of the stuff for about 2.00, it lasts a very long time. How is that expensive? I mean I'm a penny pincher and I don't think that's a bad price to pay. Besides it would cost more to buy, make, and put the right supplements into it.

I understand your concern, I had the same one although not because of the price but due to the amount of preservatives found in these cereals. I started to make my own but was told by numerous doctors that it's the added iron in these cereals that are needed for a growing baby. It's very hard to ensure that he/she is getting enough iron if you have to add it to the diet yourself in the first couple of months you are introducing solid foods. I finally found an organic cereal that was literally rice/oatmeal and iron.

I buy gerber brand and the big box is a little over 3 dollars. I dont know where u live, but i can't imagine it being much more then that anywhere. I don't know, but it kinda says something if you can't (or wont) buy a 3 dollar box of cereal for your baby!

Cook rice, prefferably brown, the purree. Freeze for later use.

Also you can buy oatbran which is highly nutritous and already in a powder. Follow the directions on the package.

There are also other very tiny grains you can feed to babies, check your local bulk barn.

It is much healthier to make your own, synthetic vitamins are not good for babies, not to mention all the oils and chemicals to improve "mouth feel"

not to be rude, but are you serious...cereal is ont of the cheapest things you can buy for baby. if you buy a big box for a few dollars that will seem like it lasts a life time. if you cannot afford it in your budget, have you looked into WIC (women infant program) they give it to you for free.

Just grind up the raw ingredients in a food processer and cook them until they are f and mushy. I suppose you could add your own supplements if you wanted. Sure, that would be the old fashioned way to do it. Good Luck!!
