Wow, that's a very broad question that depends on a lot of "ifs" for the answer. Either way, the Toyota Highlander would be a lot more reliable without a doubt. It's more comfortable to drive, its smaller and has a more car-like handling. However, it would be best put to use around town. If you're planning on hitting the slopes and climbing mountains then the Ford will do a lot better job getting you out of the snow and pulling you and your gear up the hill. Keep in mind that the Highlander comes in 5 passenger form standard and the 3rd. row is optional. The Highlander is also available as a Hybrid which Ford does not offer on it's Expedition. But even without the Hybrid version the Toyota will get a lot better mpg then the Ford. If you really want effiency get the 4-cyl. Highlander which will really stretch your dollar. Back to the Ford, if you want to tow often or take long road trips then this vehicle will suit you best. With a standard V8 it has a lot more power than the Highlander and is much bigger offering more comfort on long trips. In fact, the 3rd. row in the Expedition is actually useful compared to the Highlander's, where there's only enough room for a pet. And if that's not enough, then opt for the Expedition EL which is an extra 8 in. longer for even more room. But to put it in simple terms the Expedition is a full size SUV, whereas the Highlander is a mid-size. So comparing them is really out of the question.

Toyota all the way. I own a Toyota Camry and a Ford Explorer and I have been in the car repair and sales industry working with a number of car brands. The Toyota is the way to go. It is way more dependable and a better deal for your money. Just don't get a hybrid or any type. They are a scam that does not get anywhere close to the mileage they tell you. They will cost you much more in the long run.
