Look in your local phone book for:
- a consignment shop - you can make some $ for the items and some shops will let you set up an account towards future purchases as your child grows. Many consignment shops have great stuff - I get at least half of my kids stuff from them or second hand shops (goodwill, value village, etc..).
- a women's/family shelter. Many women end up at them for various reasons, and literally have nothing except for what is generously donated. Look in your phone book for one and give them a call. You can even go as far as to ask them if they have any pregnant women/new moms who could use what you have to offer.
- the local hospital's maternity ward and ask them if they have any new moms who are in need.
- a home for teenage mothers and donate what you have.
- the Children's Aid Society in your city and ask them if they have any foster parents who care for infants who may be in need of some baby gear.
Once you explain (to anyone) that you have some baby gear you would like donate, you'll more than likely have more than enough offers to take it off of your hands.

The Salvation Army, Goodwill, and other thrift stores will take them. But if they are in good condition they will sell them for quite a bit. Goodwill and such tend to charge a high amount for nice things so that those really in need still can't afford it. I went in once looking for a bargain and they had a pair of USED boots for $20. They were donated, that is ridiculous.
A friend of mine did this though. She went to the local Department of Human Services (DHS - Welfare office) and asked the receptionist if she could recommend some one who needed it. As it turned out, there was someone in the lobby that needed all of it. She got rid of it a the pregnant woman in the lobby got it all for free. If you know where a WIC (Women Infant and Children) office is there are plenty of needy moms and soon-to-be moms as well. You can call this number to find one 1-800-WIC-FOR-U. You can also set it out by your mailbox (not on trash day) and put a sign FREE out and some one will take it. Many newspapers will let you take a free classified for free up to $50 as well. And finally even if you don't belong to a church you can just go to one and drop the stuff off. They will place it with a family in need. I will also mention that when I had my twins I was young and still struggling. I was a waitress and a customer came in. We started talking about our kids and she told me she had a tandem stroller she didn't need anymore and I could stop by and pick it up, so you might try just talking to those around you. You might just come across some one who was once in my shoes, and believe me, I am forever grateful for it.

We have a place here called Once Upon A Child and you can 'sell' your gently used baby stuff. You don't get much money considering what you probably originally paid but when they re-sell it they keep the prices very reasonable. I like it because you can also 'trade' your items for store credit. So trade in one size for the next!!
I guess that's not exactly donating but otherwise I'd just go with the salvation army or goodwill...Maybe post signs at your job asking if anyone needs baby stuff....
Well good luck!

I have an excellent answer!
Freecycle.org
Its a community group in the area where you live, that promotes recycling and usually it is alot of people that really need articles of whatever.....
You join very easily, then you can offer something or post a wanted item. the gem of it all is when you offer, the postee wil pick up the items from your front porch!
This is a perfect way to find someone that really needs the items and they won't have to pay for it. I think it's better than Craiglist because of that reason and it stops stuff from going to the dump. I have donated a crib, credenza and my children's clothing, and among many other things, I received a brand new dresser, scooter and a pair of infant Robeez all in excellent condition! its fun to see what items are up for offer too.
Hope it works for you.

No, I don't think it's cruel. Many parents have an annual "toy cleaning" time, to be expected once a year, where the kid has to choose a certain percentage or number of toys to give away or throw away. If they don't choose, mom and dad get to choose. I think it's probably necessary to keep a home free of too much clutter, not to mention it can help a child learn to a) learn how to donate/ care about those less fortunate and b) to keep her things organized and in a nice condition. I probably wouldn't have done it while she was asleep though. Better for her to participate (choose what to give, so she can keep things of meaning to her) or the adults have to choose and she KNOWS that it's coming.

I thought my experiance might be helpful to you.
One day when I was about eight months preggo, my boyfriend and I were at Costco. This lady simply approached us and said "excuse me, but do you have a crib yet? I have one I need to get rid of." As we talked, she mentioned having a lot of stuff we could probably use if we wanted it. Turns out she gave us tons of stuff for the baby. Her generosity completely overwhelmed us and it was a tremendous help! We still talk to her too.
Maybe you could approach an expecting couple and offer your things.

The best place would most likely be craigslist.org. There are all sort of barter and buy/sell situations. Also try a crisis center for unwed mothers or any of your local churches.
