ASEAN means ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH EAST ASIAN NATIONS so the asean summit was a meeting of the members of that association with some other non-asean countries. Of course the meeting will benefit the Philippines along with other other south east asian countries because they will be talking about programmes or business or laws that will help south east asian countries prosper. A plus factor to the Philippines being the host of this year's asean summit because it will promote tourism in our country.

Your question should have read:-

What can the Philippines do to integrate with, and assist ASEAN, in the development of this region?

Since this is the poorest and least developed nation in ASEAN, I think the people of this country should not expect yet another organisation to help them and give more handouts.

It is up to Filipinos to contribute to this organisation by starting to understand that this is not the fantastic place most of them think it is - the country is bankrupt and will never be able to pay western nations back the money and aid they have given.

Better that they stop eating so much and stop playing with their phones all day long and actually put in some work, as they are paid to do.

Take Vietnam as an example of what can happen if a nation wants to succeed. They were a completely closed country until 1992, by 1994 they had already overtaken the Philippines in terms of foreign investment and tourism, and each Vietnamese was happy to work 12 hours a day with only one hour for lunch during that period.

I was amazed at how hard they worked for a dollar a day, to be able to support their families and buy the little luxuries they craved after so long under the communists.

I lived there for 3 years and had 650 Viets working for me - what a productive nation they are, and how fast they learn new things and REMEMBER them.........

Filipinos should start absorbing knowledge from other nations instead of thinking they know what they're doing, this country has become worse (standards and service) in the 14 years I've loved living here, and I feel very sorry for people who do not seem to want to improve their lives through learning new ways and methods from others who do have knowledge to pass on, and are happy to do so!

I don't think it helped.

Once it was cancelled people around the world said that it was cancelled because they didn't build the venue in time and also that they couldn't control the terrorism.

Not much was said about the actual summit.

It made them feel more powerful against the old colonial powers.
