First, decide what music you like the most. Dance is very dependent upon music, if you don't like the music, you won't like the dance.
Also, decide why you want to dance. If its for social reasons, you might want to stick to popular partnered dancing in your area (probably salsa or swing). If you want to perform, try ballet or belly dancing or hip hop (though you can perform with swing too).
I wouldn't worry too much about it. Most dancers I know start in one dance and then after a while try a bunch of different dances. Knowledge of one dance helps in many others. I myself started with swing and waltz, then studied American Smooth and Rhythm Ballroom for a year, as well as Salsa, and now am back to Swing, with some Balboa.
Also, each crowd is different. Swing dances are different from salsa dances which are different from hip hop parties. If you are a girl, you will always have someone willing to give you some free lessons.
I almost forgot, if you have a strong ethnic tradition, try to learn the folk dance of your background. It is fun and can be a good way to connect with your family history.

Try Modern dance. Modern doesn't mean the same as "contemporary". It's a type of dance that was invented in the late 1800's. It's very free and expressive. It's hard to be bad at modern dance because it includes any type of movement. Ballet is very restricting and you have to learn perfect form for every standard position, tap is just plain complicated and if you don't practice A LOT you just won't get it, hip-hop is popular right now, but many people feel uncomfortable with it because it projects only one type of personality. In modern dance, you express your own ideas, feelings, and personality through movement. It can be very beautiful. Watch some of those old Gene Kelly movies. Like in "Singin' in the Rain", where he dances with that sexy woman (Cyd Charisse) in the green dress, or in "On the Town" when they dance under the barre at the ballet studio. That kind of fluid, angular, expressive dance is for everyone. There are basic moves, and every dancer does these moves the way he or she feels like doing them. And it's loads of fun!

I've been studying and performing Middle Eastern Belly Dance for about 7 years now. There is such a wonderful variety of styles within "belly dance"... Egyptian, Turkish, Greek, fusion, tribal, tribal fusion... and much more. You learn so much about your body and controlling different muscle groups in learning the different movements. You gain an awareness and appreciation of your body through the dance. It is more modern than many may think... my daughter has performed to Nightwish, Lacuna Coil and other similar music.

The first answerer was right. Belly dancing is alot of fun. It also teaches you things that other dances might not as much, such as precise body isolations and how to become completely in-tune with your body and its sensuality. It actually helped my salsa dancing quite a bit. I really enjoy it.
