Perhaps because they are so valuable and precious. It's a way of saying that the woman you love means just that to you. You don't give diamonds to just anyone; only someone special. My husband gave me a diamond engagement ring. It's the only diamond I have because I don't buy them for myself and no one else is going to spend that much. I love the way it sparkles. It's beautiful and I've had it for 25 years.
