Technically, America is a mix of multiple ancestries, some were dominant, some were subordinate to power. Like take America's British ancestry for instance, the British was the largest empire in all human history, and America is a country that broke away from British rule, and now they are the most powerful. But we also have ancestry like the Native Americans and the Aztecs and the Incans, etc., therefore, we have a mix of lots of different ancestries. I personally believe that our drive in early US to treat everyone equal, a drive that has long since disappeared in our government, is what makes us so powerful, we still have left over influence and power from early US, that's what makes us so powerful, and pride in our past also, but if we continue the way we are going, then we will not last long, in my opinion...

I think that is a major part of why America is great. However, I think the main reason is our freedom to think, to explore, and try new ideas and ways of doing things. Freedom is a very powerful force. Another factor is our dedication to education. Widespread education did not take place in Europe until mid to late 1800s and still has not take place in Asia and may never take place in the Middle East. The more people educated the more ideas shared and discussed and developed.

probably true that North America overall has learned many lessons in tollerance and cultural solidarity through immigration, but the reverse is also true that our differences have divided us because of our overpowering desire to impose our culture and assimilate others under one U.S.
About US being way ahead of other nations, that is a false point of view. It's nice to be patriotic but realisticly Europe gets along well on it's own. The media would like us to believe that the US is totaly independant, and an international leader but we often are blinded by our own pride.

America is powerful because it was the only country that had a positive economic status at the end of WW2.
Therefore, Britain gave-up its control of the global default currency and the dollar took over. Most European nations also sent their scientists to work alongside US scientists, because Europe was broke and trying to rebuild after WW2.
Britain led the industrial revolution and still has some of the world's best scientists. America is powerful through partnership.

Only the toughest survived the trip over and or even wanted to make the journey. then only the toughest survived in a strange land with very little to work with. They became survivors.
Only by using every bit of wit and wisdom they could.
One of the reasons for the progress made in the USA was written by a famous writer. He said "most countries spent all their resources and energy and fighting to convert people to their religion. Either by subjugation or force.
He attributed all of our advances to the fact we have freedom of religion. We allowed others to believe what they wanted.
Which freed up our resources for other things.
What is causing all the problems in the world?
Isn't it the fact that each religion tries to force its self on others?

America/USA is powerful because it had the advantage of not being ripped apart by two wars in the early 20th century. In fact the USA made a profit by not helping for over 4 years. that is why it is now in the position it now holds. Personlaay we in Britain should have waited for 4 years before helping with the Iraq situation.

Not sure how you're defining "modern," but if you're defining it in terms of technology and care for most of its citizens, then the U.S. is not the most modern. I'm not even sure it's in the top 10.
As for powerful, we successfully maintain for now the illusion of being powerful. I think we are, in fact, less truly powerful now than we were in the past.
Part of our power comes from our having developed as a nation on a piece of land that is relatively safe from attack. That is, we haven't been forced to learn how to play well with others as much as a lot of other countries have. Part of it comes from us wanting (at least since WWII, anyway) to play a public global role, while other countries go about it more quietly. Plus the natural resources that another poster cited. Plus, perhaps, the fact that we were settled by risk-takers who emigrated from other countries. Or that we retain a sort of cowboy-pioneer-entrepreneurial-revolutionary culture from times past. And, we have to acknowledge, that much of our past and current wealth came (and comes) on the backs of cheap (and in the South, slave) labor, whether here or elsewhere.

Nope....the USA is way ahead in one way, that of being the richest and most powerful nation, because it has 300m citizens (3rd most in the world) who work in a productive society, creating lots of wealth, which allows them to afford the best military, best universities, et cetera.
She has a 250-year history of successful capitalism, the rule of law, freedom of religion, freedom from persecution, peaceful neighbours, etc!
The USA also has lots of natural resources. You can be rich without these (like Japan), or poor with them (Russia and Nigeria for instance).
In Brazil, which was settled by Europeans around the same time as the US, they say that if their country was run and populated by the British and not the Portugeuse, then Brazil, which is the same size and has about the same natural resources, would be as rich as the US now.

I guess I will state the obvious since no one esle will. Lets see Free land free labor of well over 200 years, that if it had to pay this country would be broke.
