It would depend on what he's depressed about. The best way to do that, without knowing, is to get his mind off of it. Take him out to the movies, bowling, a theme park, or anything that will take his mind off of whatever it is.

Get him talking. Find out what bothers him. Tell him you want to help his decision making process. Tell him that he is too emotionally involved with himself to make those decisions. Encourage him to have a few sessions with a mental health professional. Get him active because being active makes you thing less about yourself.
