anytime that the bolt head has been "rounded" at the corners by using 12 point sockets. also anytime that you can fit the socket on a bolt or nut is better to use a six pointer. The only time you should contemplate using a 12 point socket is when space is reduced, either to swing the ratchet or to fit the socket on the bolt.

A 6 point is much stronger than an 12 point it grabs the surface area much better.. 6points are for something with a fair amount of torque on it.. 12 points are for general purpose.. example 6 points are used for head bolts and lug nuts fer instance..
6 point sockets typically cost more too.. and the higher rated ones will be black not chrome..
