The most sacred building block of family has already been decimated, minimized, and flat out destroyed. With a divorce rate of over 50%, children being raised in group homes, orphanages or being shuffled through the foster system the "family" has been already redefined. Marriage is not taken seriously by those who can marry freely however we get all up in arms when others demand the right.
It is more than hypocritical that in the heterosexual world more than half of us can't make the idea of family work, we do not value it, we do not respect it. However when others are demanding the right we put on the staunchest face and defend and idea that we in practice don't even support.

Yes, that is what marriage is here. B/c we said. The union of a man and a woman, but where does it say that? In a religious book? Because in that case YOU have no right to define marriage.
The Constitution states that all men (and women, later added) are created equal and that they have the right to life, liberty and (listen carefully, now) THE P.U.R.S.U.I.T. O.F. H.A.P.P.I.N.E.S.S.
If you're implying that just because a woman can make another woman happier that a man would make that particular woman, then, even though a right granted to us by our founding fathers (not to sound terribly patriotic all of a sudden), it should not be allowed to be expressed in the same way that you would express your love? You ask why homosexuals can't just be happy with a relationship, "why do they need a union in a church?" (at least some of you narrow minded buttholes ask this) and I'll tell you why. If you were to ask your girlfriend to marry you, it would be because you would want to express your love for her because you are madly, crazy, head over heels whatever in love and you want to show her that. A family isn't always a man and a woman. You will find me NO definition that says so, at least not a legit one.
If no one is allowed to 'redefine' marriage, or marriage as you'll have it 'Mr. President', then why should you be able to redefine the Constitution or anyone's rights? I'm not even gay and I find this insulting, not to mention narrow minded. It's not up to you or your idiot President to decide the sexuality or whatever of the entire country.
What happened to Land of The Free? Doesn't exist does it?
P.S.; I wouldn't go by "Mr. President", not good for your ratings.

What society are you referring to . I believe the marriage that you are talking about has only been around forr the last 100 years. Just because you have a man and woman together doesn't mean that will love each other , pay taxes , be a responsible citizen or an law-abiding member of any community in which we all live
We have all our hopes and dreams of what marriage should, that has been passed down from our parents and other members of the community. Marriage is more than a union of love, it's an incorporation of two people's lives in pursuit of financial will being. Love can't pay the bills and faith won't keep the heat on in the winter.
How does two law abiding and tax paying people( two men or two woman) getting married cause you any love loss for your partner.

They say that marriage is an institution, I guess it all depends on if you feel like being institutionalized...seriously, though, family should start with marriage, but that's not how life works sometimes. You've got single moms, single dads, orphans, none of these are 'normal', but then 1/2 the world isn't normal...beware of statisticians and rhetoriticians bearing statistical norms, standards, and averages...for they know not of what they speak...

Everyone agrees that a family should start with a man and women in love and wanting children. That is the reason for everything. But didn't we already know that?
And if we did why do we have so many children born to single people?

marriage is the legal union of two people who wish to be seen as one unit for life.
gender makes no difference when it comes to marriage.
before 1978 marriage was one black man and one black woman or one white woman and one black man. inter-racial marriage was illegal.
are we going to repeal this supreme court case to take us back to our fundamental roots?
our cultural is divided. half value marriage and half do not.
those who truly value marriage believe it consists of two people, who love one another, trust each other, want to strive in life together, want to be one unit Vs two persons, ...
those who don't value marriage
go on shows like the Bachelor and bachelorette, who wants to marry a millionaire or a prince, those whom go to Vegas and divorce a week later,
and there are those- like the man who posted this quesiton- who would rather have marriage be about politics, anatomy, 'tradition' (look at our other traditions before you claim to want to defend them), and have nothing to do with the love, trust, and companionship it should be.
