Hands down-the Diaper Champ! You don't have to buy specific bags for it. We have both and I don't even use the Genie.
Go for the Champ! ; ) Use scented bags-it helps.
Good luck!

I'm a first time mom and we have used the diaper genie. I've had absolutley no problems with it. I just put the dirty diapers in a grocery bag then put them in the genie it really helps. They only hold about 30 diapers which is pretty good. It's all up to you in the end but I do wish I had the genie 2 but why go spend more money. When it comes to trash it's nice to have something exclusively for diapers.

I'm with Lizzie Ann.......
Don't waste your money on DIaper Genie refills........I got a ton of these little diaper disposal bags at Big Lots. They were around $2 for 100 bags. the bags have a light scent, much like the Genie refills......but WAY cheaper.
I roll up the diapers, and fold the tape around. The wet ones just go into the garbage can, the dirty ones get tied into the disposal bags and thrown in there as well. the room smells fine and I am not shelling out $8 each for Genie refills.....

The diaper genie is good but the consumables will kill you. The diaper champ is superior in terms of cost. You can mitigate the financial hit from the Diaper Genie by looking out for sales on refills, or looking for refills on eBay or at flea markets. If you find a good deal, stock up big time.
Also, don't bother using the Diaper Genie until your baby is no longer exclusively breastfeeding. Breast milk turns into poop that lacks any offensive odor. Once you start giving your tot baby food, then you'll want to set up the Diaper Genie.

Don't buy a special diaper disposal system. You are getting rid of smelly diapers...why pay for something special. 9 times out of 10 they really do not work, based on many friends who use them.. they stink anyway.
Wrap the #2 ones up in a plastic grocery bag (with no holes) and then put the diaper directly into an outside trash can. The urine ones can just go into a bathroom trash can but change that every other day..those can smell too. Either way, commercial system or not, you have to do maintenance to keep the odor away.

I think using the diaper genie is very wastefull. You don't really need to wrap each individual diaper in a plastic bag.
Firstly if you breastfeed even the poopy diapers aren't going to smell. Secondly no matter what unless you leave the pee diapers for days they aren't going to smell.
Secondly even when the poop does smell (like my son's now that he eats food). I just put them in a small garbage can with a lid with a little baking soda in the bag. At the end of the day I take them out to the trash.

We had a diaper genie for our first kid. It worked really well until he started solids (at 5 months), then got worse when he started milk (at 12 months). For the new baby we just take them outside to the big trash can. It's kind of nice to have something to put them in during those first few months when they go through so many diapers every day, but once they start solids I'm not sure there's much you can do indoors.

I've got the new diaper genie.
But, all pails stink after some time. The thing I like about the genie is the pail smells horrible but it stays in the pail. With the others it seemed to "leak" out and my son's room smelled like poop. :(( But, no probs with genie! And, the Stage 2 inserts are the best. Don't go with the stage one. The stage 2 are stronger and the powder perfume is more masking.
Also, I found if I cleaned/scrubbed with a Dawn and Bleach (use color safe if you want a more palatable bleach smell) once a month the whole pail smelled better when I opened it.
I only use the pail for poopy diapers. I keep pee diapers in the spare room (new nursery, we'll have to move it to the bathroom later) in a tightly sealed waste pail. It's small just like your bathroom trash can. And, they don't smell at all. We take it out once the pail gets full.
BTW, My son was breastfed for nearly 9 months, and poop is poop. Believe me it all stinks. Breast poop is less offensive but still stinks!!
