Trane, Carrier or Lennox are safe bets. People have thier personal preferances. Our service techs prefer Carrier because they are easier to service. Whatever you do, get a good service company to do the install. I would rather have a budget model like a goodman or ICP installed correctly than a top of the line unit with a crappy install.
You may be able to find a good lower priced unit in one of the secondary brands. ICP and Bryant is owned by Carrier, Armstrong and Ducane is owned by Lennox. Often times there is the exact same unit with different brand labels stuck on the outside so name brand doesn't necessarily mean it's good or bad. get a reputable installer and you should be fine.
I will say this, Goodman heat pumps are NOISY!!!
You can go to http://www.hvac-talk.com/vbb/
Go to the residential section and talk to some pros. Some good people there but don't ask for installation help unless you are a service tech.
Asking what someone recommends is fine though and they are very willling to help. also discussing prices is big no-no on those boards.

Trane used to be one of the top brands, but I wouldn't have one now. I would get a Carrier or Bryant. You really can't size a system based on square footage alone because windows, shading and infiltration play a huge role in heat gain.

We used a comapny called 2nd Wind. They put in a Tempstar system. It came with a 10 year parts and Labor Warranty from 2nd Wind. It's the first time I ever saw a temperature setting and the temperature in the house actually match.

Speedgeek is right.
All brands nowadays are reliable. The difference is how the system is designed and installed. Spend more time researching the installer rather than the manufacturer.
