It's because the "popular" people seem to control everything, but they can only control what other people let them control. However, for people with low self-esteem it's hard for them to not feel the need to be accepted by the acknowledged "in crowd".

Who cares about "fitting in"? Why would anyone want to fit in to something as dumb as the majority? Be yourself, do what makes sense rather than doing what every one else is doing.
Popularity is a shallow bubble value. It can bought with conformity, it can be lost with an independant thought. It aint worth anything!

they have a need to fit in. everyone would like to have someone to talk too. But just limiting yourself to popular people seems like a self-esteem issue to me.

I guess to fit in. Myself, i was a loner in high school. i was never a follower always a leader. i always did what i felt was in my best interest. i had few friends, but i had my family. I tell my children to always be a leader and not a follower, unless you are in the military. Strange, they went to the military after high school.
